design built around you

With her eye for bold print combinations and space-making, Nicole Crowder has curated a rare workshop-retreat in Minnesota that combines upholstery work with connection. The 1-day overnight experience is designed to provide hands-on learning in an intimate setting to learn upholstery skills while centering reflection and creative restoration.

The workshop-retreat is meant to give design and home décor enthusiasts skills on how to approach upholstery projects like chairs, benches, and ottomans, with the hopes of giving you confidence to no longer pass up on another great vintage find you see on the street or in the store in the future.

During the workshop, attendees will learn about Nicole’s personal process of identifying and pairing fabric pattern and color combinations, and will be provided with a wide variety of fabrics, all provided by our sponsor Folio Fabrics. You will work in pairs to reupholster an accent chair, ottoman or bench.

The workshop is designed exclusively to upholster different types of chairs. Because Nicole wants to rethink “completion” as a metric for success, the goal for the day and a half workshop is not to complete any of the pieces, but to learn the process and techniques for doing so.

At the end of the retreat, each attendee will experience a private 20-minute massage by Laddavanh Sanychan of Tevada Massage. The massage is meant to soothe and thank your body for the mental and physical work you have achieved over the course of the past day.
